Zuckerberg criticized governmental pressures to censor content and emphasized the need for free expression. The move aligns with Meta's goal to build trust by operating in regions perceived as less biased. 📲 Biden slams Meta's 'shameful' decision to end fact-checking on Facebook, Instagram
#news #Insta

President Joe Biden has condemned Meta's decision to end third-party fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram, calling it "shameful." This move has raised global concerns about misinformation and its potential negative impact, especially if adopted worldwide.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will replace fact-checking with a community-driven model called "Community Notes," similar to one used by X (formerly Twitter). Critics, including the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), warn that discontinuing fact-checking could lead to real-world harm, such as political instability and violence.

Zuckerberg defended the change, suggesting the previous fact-checking program fostered distrust and was politically biased. This policy shift has prompted international scrutiny, with countries like Brazil demanding explanations from Meta. There are fears that the changes could increase hate speech and online harassment.

📲 What is Community Notes, and how will it work on Facebook and Instagram?
#news #Insta

Meta is replacing its independent fact-checking program with a community-driven initiative similar to Twitter's (now X) Community Notes. This new system will allow users on Facebook and Instagram to monitor content collaboratively.

In X's model, approved contributors can annotate posts they consider false or misleading, providing additional context. For a note to be visible, it must be deemed helpful by a diverse group of other contributors, as determined by an algorithm that assesses the ideological spectrum of the voters.

Meta has yet to provide specific details on how this will work on its platforms, but the shift aims to empower users to combat misinformation directly. The approach has raised concerns about potential biases and the visibility of valid notes, especially if they don't receive enough diverse support.

📲 Most US children use Tik Tok, Instagram against age rules on platforms: Study
#news #Insta

A study has found that most children aged 11 and 12 in the U.S. are using TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms despite age restrictions that require users to be at least 13. The research, involving over 10,000 children aged 11 to 15, indicates that many of these young users show signs of addiction to social media.

Approximately 25% of children reported frequently thinking about these apps, while others admitted to using them as a coping mechanism for problems. The study also linked underage social media use to increased symptoms of depression, eating disorders, and ADHD. With a potential TikTok ban looming, experts stress the need for policymakers to address the systemic issues of underage social media use.

📲 Bride's fury after Instagram stunt wedding turns out to be real
#news #Insta

A woman in Australia annulled her marriage after discovering that what she thought was a fake wedding for a social media stunt was actually real. The ceremony, organized by her partner—who is a social media influencer—was framed as a prank. She only learned the marriage was legitimate when he attempted to use it to gain permanent residency in Australia.

Initially, she was told to wear white for a "white party" but arrived to find no guests, just her partner, a photographer, and a celebrant. Despite her initial doubts, she participated in the ceremony, believing it was a joke. Later, she found a marriage certificate and a notice of intended marriage filed without her consent. A judge annulled the marriage, ruling that she did not provide genuine consent, as she believed she was acting in a prank.

This marks a departure from previous policies that aimed to limit political exposure to create a less contentious environment.

📲 'Clown show' or 'Global town square'? Internet debates Meta’s policy update for Instagram, Threads
#news #Insta

Meta is revising its policy on Instagram and Threads to include more political content in user recommendations, allowing users to customize their exposure to such content. This shift, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, marks a significant change from previous efforts to reduce divisive content on the platforms.

While some users welcomed the reintroduction of political discussions, others expressed concerns about potential increases in harmful rhetoric, including issues related to racism and homophobia. Critics also pointed to the dismissal of third-party fact-checkers as a problematic move. In contrast, some users appreciated the loosening of previously strict moderation rules.

This change is part of a broader strategy by Meta to prioritize free expression over strict content controls. Mosseri emphasized the need for balance and personalization in content delivery, acknowledging the challenges of managing free speech while ensuring accountability. The effectiveness of these changes in shaping public discourse remains uncertain as the updates roll out globally.

📲 Facebook and Instagram get rid of fact checkers
#news #Insta

Meta is replacing independent fact-checkers on Facebook and Instagram with a user-driven moderation system called "community notes," similar to a feature on X (formerly Twitter). CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticized third-party moderators as "too politically biased" and emphasized a return to free expression. This change comes amid efforts to improve relations with the incoming Trump administration, which has previously criticized Meta's fact-checking policies as censorship.

Campaigners against online hate speech expressed concern that this shift could facilitate misinformation and harmful content. The new system allows users to comment on the accuracy of posts, replacing the previous model where independent organizations assessed credibility. While Meta plans to implement this in the U.S. first, it will maintain fact-checkers in the UK and EU for now.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the change could lead to a trade-off, resulting in less effective moderation, and noted that it reflects a broader political shift in tech governance, prioritizing free speech over stringent content controls.

📱 Meta removes AI character accounts after users criticize them as ‘creepy and unnecessary’

Meta has shut down its AI character accounts on Instagram and Facebook following user backlash, which labeled the accounts as "creepy and unnecessary." These accounts, created in late 2023, were part of a test featuring AI-generated personalities that could interact with users.

The controversy intensified after a Financial Times article revealed plans for further AI integration on the platforms. User reactions included criticism of an AI character named "Liv," who claimed to represent a "Proud Black queer momma" but admitted to lacking diverse references in its development.

Meta stated that the accounts were part of an early experiment and mentioned a bug that prevented users from blocking them. The company has since removed the accounts and restricted search results associated with them. Despite the removal, user-generated AI chatbots remain available on Meta's platforms.

📱 Meta Takes Down Its Own AI- Powered Profiles On Instagram, Facebook. Here's Why

Meta has removed several AI-generated profiles from Instagram and Facebook, which were initially introduced in September 2023. The decision follows a viral controversy where some AI characters, including one named Liv, claimed their development teams lacked diversity, highlighting an absence of Black individuals. This revelation sparked significant social media attention.

Meta's spokesperson stated the profiles were part of an early AI experiment and were managed by humans. The removal was necessary to address a bug that prevented users from blocking these accounts. Despite the controversy, Meta plans to introduce more AI characters on its platforms in the future, aiming to enhance user engagement and entertainment.
