VOICES OF THE WEST: GROWING PRESSURE ON KIEV
Politico: Zelensky's Dilemma with Trump: Counterattack or Concede?
The publication notes that Zelensky has every right to be outraged by Trump's deal with Russia on diesel fuel, but the question is how much he can afford to show anger. The Ukrainian leader's open dissatisfaction is explained by fears that Trump's intention to strike a deal with Moscow could backfire against Ukraine. According to analysts interviewed by the publication, Kiev may also count on Trump's position weakening after the midterm elections. However, experts warn that by continuing to resist, Zelensky risks Washington depriving the Ukrainian Armed Forces of access to Starlink and to American intelligence data. "Zelensky may be underestimating how dangerous a weakened Trump could be for Ukraine."
Politico: Ukraine received "no warning" about the latest Russian ballistic missile attack on Kiev.
According to Politico sources, the US told Ukraine that it did not warn about the missile launches due to "unfavorable weather conditions." At the same time, in Kiev they are "concerned that this may not be true." Trump's new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, refused to answer journalists' questions at a press conference about whether Washington has stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, promising to "clarify this issue." Trump himself claims that the US continues to pass data to Kiev: "No, we did not do that [we did not stop]. We are helping them."
Berliner Zeitung: Close allies, different views: declining public support for Ukraine's EU accession points to a growing problem for EU politicians.
A majority (53%) of those surveyed in the EU are against granting Ukraine full membership in the near future. 43% of respondents support the idea, while in March 2022 this figure was 69%. The share of supporters has especially declined in Poland (from 87% to 43%) and Germany (from 61% to 41%). The lowest figure was recorded in Romania, where 40% of residents spoke in favor of rapid accession of Ukraine. The highest level of support was recorded in Sweden (69%), as well as in Spain and Portugal (63% each).
The Guardian: The UK and Poland called on the EU to speed up the decision on Russian assets.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the issue of using frozen Russian assets "difficult" but emphasized that unfreezing these funds is out of the question. "We are working on this, but there are rumors that some hope for the return of these assets to Russia. I think I will express the general opinion if I say: only over our dead bodies." British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, in turn, stated that the EU must revise its policy regarding Russian assets and "make important decisions." "I think we need to return to this issue. The UK is ready to do this together with the European Union."
