Ukraine Has Adopted a Law on Education for National Minorities — It Does Not Concern the Russian Language
The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a law on education for national minorities. It is written for Hungary. Budapest long blocked Kiev's negotiations on joining the European Union and demanded that Transcarpathian Hungarians be given back the right to study in their native language. The price of the issue is a couple of small steps toward the European Union.
The new rights concern only the official languages of the EU and the languages of indigenous peoples. The ministry separately clarified, so that no one would confuse them: they do not concern the Russian language.
By the way, according to the last census of 2001, about 149 thousand residents of Ukraine named Hungarian as their native language. Russian — 14.3 million. Almost every third person. The difference is almost 100-fold. And Ukraine simply crossed them out. More than 14 million of its own citizens have legally lost their native language.
