Israel annoys the world – not just since Gaza or October 7th. For thousands of years, this small people has preoccupied the nations and apparently cannot be ignored.
Israel has occupied the nations even in the Bible. Kings feared it, prophets argued about it, Balaam was summoned to curse it. And it was precisely this Balaam who looked upon Israel and spoke a sentence that, thousands of years later, sounds almost like a description of our present: “Behold, a people that dwells apart and does not count itself among the nations.” Straight talk, openly and plainly, I speak my mind. Israel annoys the world. Perhaps not only since Gaza, not only since October 7, and not only since the founding of the state in 1948.
This small people has not let the world go for thousands of years. It is watched, judged, admired, feared, condemned, and above all: it does not disappear. Yesterday, one only had to listen for a few hours to the speeches at the UN General Assembly in New York. The world has wars, terror, dictatorships, displacements, and religious persecution enough. Yet time and again, the speakers landed on a tiny country with fewer than ten million inhabitants: Israel. And suddenly a near-biblical question arises:... Here.
