💻Сегодня на уроке студент спросил: а какие еще есть варианты, чтобы сказать, что ты забыл слово или не знаешь, как выразить какую-нибудь мысль на английском?

И я сразу вспомнила видео, где наша Мирра Андреева после победы в полуфинале Ролан Гаррос благодарит зрителей на французском, не знает слово и без какого-либо стеснения, без неловких пауз спрашивает у интервьюера, и ее речь продолжается!

Это оооочеень важный скилл, поэтому давайте сегодня посмотрим на фразы, которые помогут в таких ситуациях 💻

«Как вы это называете?» ❌How do you call it? – калька с русского здесь не сработает

Лучше так:
👉What do you call it? – neutral
👉What's it called? – neutral
👉What's the English word for it? – neutral
👉How do you say «…» in English? – neutral
👉I don't know how to say it in English – neutral
👉I can't think of the word – neutral
👉I can't remember the word – neutral
👉I'm blanking on the word – spoken English / informal
👉The word slipped my mind – neutral / spoken English
👉It's on the tip of my tongue – idiomatic / spoken English
👉What's the word I'm looking for? – neutral
👉I forget what it's called – spoken American English


А вот варианты, как можно заменить слово, которое не знаешь:
👉thingy – informal / casual
👉stuff – informal, обычно о вещах в целом, одно конкретное слово им не заменить
👉what do you call it – как вставка посреди фразы / spoken English
👉whatever it's called – spoken English
👉…or whatever – informal / casual
