Three years ago, on September 19, 2023, Azerbaijani forces launched a massive military attack on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
Within days, more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians were forced to flee their ancestral homeland. More than 200 people were killed, including civilians.
This was not simply the end of a war. It was the culmination of a process that resulted in the displacement of the entire Armenian population of Artsakh.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), the leading international organization bringing together scholars of genocide and other atrocity crimes, adopted a resolution addressing the events in Nagorno-Karabakh. The resolution described the forced removal of the Armenian population as crimes against humanity, genocidal acts, ethnic cleansing and forcible transfer, and warned of the broader genocidal dimensions and risks surrounding the destruction of the Armenian community in Artsakh.
Three years later, the people of Artsakh remain displaced from their homes.
Remembering is not enough. We must also study, document, and understand how mass atrocities become possible - and what can be done to punish perpetrators and prevent them from happening again.
