Spain won the World Cup — and domestic violence calls spiked 1,208%

In the hours after Spain won the 2026 World Cup (July 19, late night to early Monday morning), calls to Spain's domestic violence helpline 016 increased 1,208% compared to the same window the previous week. The figure comes from Spain's Ministry of Equality.

This is a well-documented pattern globally — major football wins (not just losses) spike domestic violence incidents. The combination of alcohol, extreme emotion, and people being confined together at home or returning from celebrations creates flash points in households where abuse already exists.

Spain won, millions celebrated in the streets — and behind closed doors, the numbers tell a different story.
