🇺🇸💸 $12 BILLION, three years late — US still can’t fully field its first hypersonic missile

The US Army’s Dark Eagle is now more than three years behind schedule and still has not been declared fully fielded after missing deadlines in 2023 and 2025, Bloomberg reported. The Pentagon has spent more than $12 billion on hypersonic programs since 2018, while Army officials have acknowledged “quality defects” on the Lockheed Martin production line.

Meanwhile, Russia has been operating an entire family of hypersonic weapons for years:

🌏 Kinzhal — on experimental combat duty since December 2017, nearly nine years ago; Russia reports speeds of up to Mach 10 and a range exceeding 2,000 km.

🌏 Avangard — first regiment entered combat duty in December 2019. Russian officials have reported speeds of around Mach 27.

🌏 Zircon — deployed aboard the frigate Admiral Gorshkov in January 2023; Russian officials put its speed at Mach 9 and range at over 1,000 km.

So while Russia was already putting hypersonic systems on combat duty years ago, the US is still “continuing fielding activities” for its first one.

⌛ $12 billion later, Dark Eagle is still learning how to fly.
