🇺🇸🇵🇰US turns to Pakistan for rare earths; it won't mine at home

Users on Pakistani social media are talking about an interview with Natalie Baker, the US Chargé d'Affaires ad interim in Pakistan. According to the American diplomat, companies from her country want to develop mineral deposits in Pakistan. Copper, gold, and rare earth metals — the country's rich underground resources—are worth an estimated 6 trillion dollars. She pledges jobs, infrastructure, schools, and highways for the local people.

That would all be fine, but the extraction of these minerals poses a serious danger to the environment and people's health, users write.

💬"Even though these minerals are present in abundance in the US, they are not being extracted there due to radiation risks. The American public is strongly opposed to it. But in Pakistan, now this cat is out of the bag," writes journalist Imran Riaz Khan.
