🤔 Why the US isn’t strong enough to make Iran’s economy collapse

Treasury chief Scott Bessent predicted in late September that Iran’s economy would collapse within two weeks after its remaining oil shipments to China arrived and the ‘Operation Economic Outcast’ campaign to choke Tehran off from every single source of income and resources shifted into high gear.

Two weeks on, Iran is still there, as resilient and stubbornly resistant to US pressure as ever despite more than a year of kinetic, economic and shadow wars by enemies. Here’s why:

➡️ Iran has decades of experience living under the toughest sanctions the US and the global institutions it controls can serve up, targeting everything from trade, shipping and sovereign assets to tech transfers, banking, agricultural inputs, medical equipment, civil aviation, and consumer goods.

➡️ The country has a massive, highly diversified industrial base and associated export portfolio, from steel and petrochemicals to cars, industrial machinery, complex turbines, food, and even high tech like nano, polymers and pharma.

➡️ Non-oil exports account for up to 45% of Iran’s foreign trade (in Saudi Arabia it’s 28%), and a diversified domestic economy means much of what Iran does import is not essential, and can be replaced using import-substitution, often at a lower cost.

➡️ Despite limited farmlands, difficult climatic conditions and limited rainfall, Iran has created a world-class agricultural sector accounting for up to ~85% of its subsistence needs.

➡️ Iran is completely energy self-sufficient, and has proven itself capable to rapidly repairing damage to the sector after devastating US-Israeli attacks.

➡️ Together, the latter two factors mean the country can’t be starved or enervated into submission by Washington.

Over a long enough timeframe, a sustained US campaign targeting Iran’s exports would have a major deleterious impact on the overall economy, but observers say the US is far more vulnerable to economic and energy warfare than Tehran in the short term, leaving it only a matter of time before Washington is forced to fold, or collapse its own economy and the dollar system on which it’s based.
