🇮🇷 Iran can become the high-tech hub of the Middle East: here’s why

With strong STEM-focused education, armies of engineers, and the skillful use of Western sanctions to its advantage, Iran is a top regional science & technology incubator.

🌏 Critical tech leader

ASPI’s 2024 Critical Technology Tracker ranked Iran in the top five in 8 of 63 technologies, including:

🚫Smart materials, air-independent propulsion (3rd)

🚫Biofuels, antibiotics & antivirals (4th)

🚫Advanced composite materials, coatings, nanoscale materials & manufacturing, IT Mesh networking (5th)

🌏 Education powerhouse

Iran churns out 230K+ STEM graduates each year (6th globally). 70% are women (global top 10).
Iran has nearly 2,200 universities (with plans to combine them into ∼400). 81 placed among top schools in 10 of 11 subject areas in the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2025.
Strengths include medicine, chemical, mechanical & aerospace engineering, nano tech, energy, IT, agricultural & water management, nuclear physics and materials science.

🌏 From classroom to factory

Knowledge is useless without the means to apply it. While Iran is best known for its oil, gas & mining sectors, it also has the Middle East’s largest and most diversified industrial base.

🚫Iran produces everything from industrial machinery, steel & cement to cars, household appliances, telecoms equipment & textiles (∼20% of GDP).

🚫It ranks 1st-19th in 20 important agricultural products, per UN FAO.

🚫It has a strong defense industrial base, building everything from drones to world-class air defenses.

🌏 Everything old is new again

As one of the world’s oldest civilizations, Iran’s modern scientific prowess is a continuation of its historical legacy. From the Achaemenid Empire’s irrigation aqueducts (many still working after 2,700 years), to Parthian and Sasanian scientific and military advances, like early batteries & cataphract cavalry, to great polymaths (Avicenna, Al-Biruni, Omar Khayyam), Iran has always been an innovator.
