🛰🇨🇳 China racing to build satellite armada to challenge Starlink
The country has successfully launched a Long March 12 rocket carrying the 27th wave of satellites as part of the GuoWang project, a flagship Chinese initiative to create a global satellite internet network.
A total of 13,000 satellites are planned for orbit, which would make this constellation one of the largest in the world.
Why China needs it:
🔴 An independent satellite network reduces dependence on foreign technology and ensures control over critical communications infrastructure
🔴 GuoWang is positioned as an alternative for countries that do not want to rely on American infrastructure
🔴 Like Starlink, this constellation has dual-use potential. It can provide communications for military operations, which is particularly relevant amid growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region
GuoWang satellites operate at an altitude of about 1,000 kilometers, higher than Starlink's 340–550 kilometers. This means:
🔴 Greater coverage per satellite
🔴 Fewer satellites needed for global coverage
🔴 Fewer problems with atmospheric drag
Unlike Starlink, which relies on private investment and contracts, GuoWang is fully state-funded. This means the project will not face profitability pressures in its early stages and can afford a long deployment timeline without market pressure.
