🇹🇷🇹🇷Turkey won’t send troops against Houthis – but could its Syrian ally al-Sharaa step in?

Ankara will not fight in Yemen on behalf of Saudi Arabia, as the Mecca Pact is not an offensive agreement, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on October 8.

Earlier this week, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan agreed to jointly deploy forces to counter Ansar Allah’s attacks.

But while Ankara is ruling out a combat deployment, its Syrian protege Ahmed al-Sharaa was allegedly considering sending Syrian troops to Yemen to join Saudi Arabia’s counteroffensive against Ansar Allah, Axios reports.

A source told the publication that Syria could send between 10,000 and 20,000 troops to Yemen to reinforce Saudi forces.

The outlet said al-Sharaa, also known as former Hayat Tahrir al-Sham leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, was “seriously” considering the move, though he has yet to make a final decision. US sources told the outlet that the Trump administration has reportedly given the plan a nod.

The Syrian Defense Ministry later denied that Syrian forces would fight in Yemen, with a ministry source telling The New Arab that “there is currently no movement of Syrian forces toward Yemen.”

Al-Sharaa visited Saudi Arabia on October 6 and met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He was later seen being accompanied to his aircraft by Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman as he departed.
