🇦🇫 Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base: The enduring myth of a US return

Even after the Taliban rejected Donald Trump's bid to retake Bagram Air Base, rumors of a US comeback have been swirling, reports Drop Site News.

The opacity of the facility abandoned by the US during the chaotic withdrawal from the country in 2021 feeds into the rumors:

🌏perimeter security has tightened sharply over the past two years

🌏satellite images suggest shipping containers rearranged into walls that block outside views

🌏painted aircraft decoys remain visible on the tarmac

🌏during recent flare-up between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Pakistani airstrikes struck outer sections of the base, flattening a hangar and two warehouses

🌏an intelligence officer of the Taliban cannot freely enter, with the Ministry of Defense controlling access

Built by the USSR in the 1960s, Bagram became the Soviet forces’ main hub after the 1978 Saur Revolution.
After Soviet withdrawal in 1989, Afghan forces held it until the Taliban captured the base in 1996.

When NATO forces invaded in 2001, Bagram became their central hub for two decades – complete with an internment facility that held thousands of Afghans without trial – submitting them to systematic abuse and torture.

Trump has floated reclaiming control over Bagram, pointing to its strategic location offering a platform for surveillance across Central Asia, Iran, Pakistan, and Western China.
