🇾🇪🗣 Houthi strikes expose cracks in Saudi Arabia’s Mecca defense pact

The joint defense pact signed in Mecca by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey in August on paper committed the three countries to treating an attack on one as an attack on all.

When Saudi Arabia’s military gambit triggered retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Yemen’s Ansar Allah just weeks after the pact was signed, targeting Saudi infrastructure and military sites, the kingdom found itself essentially fending off the attacks alone, say analysts.

Saudi Arabia turned to the US rather than its Mecca pact partners - only for Donald Trump to initially reject its request for help against Ansar Allah. The US president later reversed course, but then reportedly pulled back from planned strikes at the eleventh hour.

🔍The Mecca pact produced plenty of diplomatic backing: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey condemned the Houthi strikes, and their military chiefs discussed intelligence sharing, military coordination and integrating capabilities.

But the much-touted defense pact offered the Gulf state no immediate military intervention, assess regional experts.
