US, Iran reopen backchannel talks as Hormuz remains key sticking point
The US and Iran have resumed indirect contacts through mediators, with officials from both sides holding separate discussions in afresh bid to end the war, Reuters reports.
Further talks are expected to center on an amended version of Iran’s seven-day ceasefire proposal presented on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to a cited official.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is awaiting a formal response to its ceasefire proposals from the US.
Iran calls for:
🔴End to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon
🔴Unfreezing of billions of dollars in Iranian assets
🔴Allowing resumption of oil sales
🔴End to the US blockade of Iranian ports
🔴Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within seven days
🔴Renewed nuclear talks
Trump said Saturday he had rejected Iran’s proposal, but later indicated that US negotiators would engage in further talks this week.
