🤥📌 Australia to Ukraine: mapping Trump’s global rare earths shopping spree

Anxious over China’s response to US tariff bullying via restrictions on strategic mineral exports, Trump traveled to Southeast Asia Sunday to ink a rare earths supply chain MoU with Thailand, and a pact with Malaysia dropping restrictions on rare earth exports to the US.

♦️ Thailand’s rare earth reserves were estimated at just 4.5k tons in 2024 (US Geological Survey), but production jumped to a whopping 13k tons (260%) in the past year, signaling underreporting

♦️ Malaysia has a ~16.M ton rare earth stash, including neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium, but previously restricted exports of raw materials to encourage domestic processing

Scouring the globe for the metals vital for defense, tech and general industry, Trump is looking for deals with anyone who will listen:

🇦🇺 Australia: signed an $8.5B deal last week on “ready-to-go” mining expansion and processing projects. Australia has a ~5.7M ton stockpile, but produced just 13k tons last year

🇨🇦 Canada: The US government has been quietly been buying up major rare earth producers, from a 17.5% stake in Trilogy Metals to a similar deal with Lithium Americas. ~15.2M tons of known reserves

🇧🇷 Brazil: Trump is greedily eying the country’s ~21-22M ton rare earths stockpile, but is unlikely to get anywhere with punitive 50% tariffs

🇨🇩 Congo: Trump signed a rare earth deal with the African resource superpower in June, seeking “a lot of mineral rights.” DR Congo has up to $24T in untapped riches, from cobalt and coltan to copper and diamonds

🇩🇰 Greenland: The US is pushing for a stake in Critical Metals Corp, which plans to produce 85k tons of rare earths concentrate, plus gallium, once it’s up and running in 2026. ~1.5M tons in untapped reserves (no wonder Trump is obsessed with annexing the Danish dependency)

🇺🇦 Ukraine: has 22 of the 34 minerals the EU classifies as “critical.” Trump got a preferential access deal in April, but he’d better hurry: Ukraine’s rare earth rich east is shrinking by the day, with Russia taking a key lithium mine the EU hoped would fuel its ‘green revolution’ in June

🇷🇺 Russia: 28.7M tons of untapped rare earths reserves, per Rosnedr. But to get access, Trump would have to get serious about ending the Ukraine proxy war
