🚨 Project Rainbow: When Soviet Union forced US to shelve its revolutionary spy plane

The downing of Francis Gary Powers’ U-2 by a Soviet S-75 missile in 1960 exposed the vulnerability of US aerial reconnaissance and triggered a major geopolitical shift.

▪️ The incident humiliated Washington and led the Kennedy administration to halt all manned overflights of Soviet territory to avoid further diplomatic crises.

▪️ This policy directly undermined the CIA’s ambitious A-12 “Oxcart” program — a Mach 3+, high-altitude stealth spy plane built from titanium (ironically sourced covertly from the USSR).

▪️ Designed as the untouchable successor to the U-2, the A-12 incorporated radar-absorbent materials, supersonic speed, and advanced ECM to penetrate Soviet defenses.

▪️ Despite entering service in 1967, outperforming the SR-71 in speed and altitude trials, and proving valuable during Vietnam missions, the A-12’s primary mission — strategic reconnaissance over the USSR — became politically impossible due to the strength of Soviet air defenses.

▪️ Coupled with emerging satellite technology offering safer alternatives, the program was retired in 1968.
