Most of us build the run looking up. Taller walls, a covered top, hardware cloth over every window. 🔨 Meanwhile the thing that actually gets in is standing at the bottom of the wall with its paws in the dirt.
The answer is a predator apron, and the trick is that it does not go into the ground. You lay it flat on the grass instead. Staple the inside edge to the bottom of the frame, run it out two feet, and pin it down with landscape staples. By spring the grass has grown right up through the wire and you will forget it is there. 🌱
It works because a digger starts where it smells birds, which is tight against the wall. It hits wire, gets nowhere, and does not think to back up two feet and start over. One afternoon and one roll of hardware cloth closes the last easy way in. What finally pushed you to upgrade your run?
