I can’t believe I used to sit and shell beans one pod at a time.🤯
1. I like to leave my bean plants in the garden until most of the plant and the pods are dry. It’s best to bring them in when there are still a few green leaves left though.
2. I have my kids pull the pods off the bean plants. You can beat the plants with the pods still attached, but we do not have adequate space at this point to allow large piles of bean plants to be spread out and dried. WARNING: if you leave the bean plants with the pods on in large piles even for a few days, they will get moldy.
3. We lay out the beans in our basement with a dehumidifier to completely dry.
4. Then we put the pods into a pillowcase and beat them on the porch until all the beans have fallen out.
5. Blowing the chaff off of the beans in front of a fan has got to be my favorite part!
6. I lay out the shelled beans for another two weeks just to make sure they’re dried completely through and through before I put them into an airtight jar to last for years to come.
