🕳️ The Only Two Black Holes Ever Directly Imaged
So far, astronomers have released direct images of the shadows of two black holes:
M87* — revealed in 2019, about 55 million light-years away.
Sagittarius A* — revealed in 2022, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way.
These images don’t show the black holes themselves, which emit no light, but their shadows surrounded by glowing hot gas, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope.
