🪐Webb’s Surprise Discovery
Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have discovered a previously unknown giant exoplanet, Beta Pictoris d, located about 63 light-years from Earth.
What makes this discovery remarkable is that Webb wasn’t even searching for a new planet. While analyzing another known planet, scientists detected the unique chemical fingerprint of carbon monoxide hidden within the data. Follow-up observations also revealed water vapor and methane, confirming the planet’s identity.
This marks one of the first times an exoplanet has been identified through spectroscopy rather than traditional imaging, demonstrating how Webb can uncover hidden worlds by studying the chemistry of their atmospheres.
