Yana finally saw Maria, with Angelina Jolie as legendary opera diva Maria Callas.
Directed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Spencer), the film explores Callas’s inner life. Jolie took vocal lessons and studied rare interviews and recordings to understand her technique.
“I wanted to understand what it’s like to live with a voice that is both your gift and your curse,” she said.
The story follows Callas’s final years, loneliness, struggles and memories of fame. Filmed mainly in Paris, it evokes the 1970s through Massimo Cantini Parrini’s costumes and Edward Lachman’s cinematography.
Critics call it an Oscar contender. It has an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score and earned $12 million in its first week. Variety praised Jolie, saying she “inhabits” Callas in one of her finest performances.
Well worth seeing on the big screen for its visuals and attention to detail.
