Need a gripping weekend watch amid runway buzz: The Girlfriend (“My Son’s Girlfriend”), a six-part psychological thriller based on Michelle Frances’s 2017 novel, premiered September 10.

A controlling mother’s world shifts when her son brings home a girlfriend. Their bond becomes a rivalry, and it’s unclear who’s the victim—or pulling the strings. The show moves slowly, but its twists keep you guessing. Episodes alternate between the perspectives of Lauren, the mother, and Cherry, the girlfriend.

Robin Wright plays the mother and directed the first three episodes; Olivia Cooke stars as Cherry, with Laurie Davidson as the son. The series has an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score. A second season hasn’t been announced, but the finale sparked online debate.
