Thus, what distinguishes ethnography or social and cultural
anthropology from other disciplines is not the set of methodologies or
the investigation of other cultures as such, but the capacity to reflect on social categorisations, relationships and power structures based on the experience of being puzzled and perplexed. If this is achieved, it becomes possible to question categories of gender and religion, for example, and, furthermore, to think about religion (especially Islam) and gender (especially women) together rather than as contradictory aspects.

Таким образом, этнографию или социальную и культурную антропологию от других дисциплин отличает не методология или сам факт исследования иных культур, но способность размышлять о социальных категориях, отношениях и структурах власти, основываясь на собственном опыте озадаченности или растерянности. Если это получается сделать, то сразу можно, например, подвергнуть сомнению категории гендера и религии или помыслить религию (в частности, ислам) и гендер (в частности, женщин) как смежные, а не как противоречащие друг другу явления.
