CTF (Capture The Flag) is a kind of information security competition that challenges contestants to solve a variety of tasks ranging from a scavenger hunt on wikipedia to basic programming exercises, to hacking your way into a server to steal data. In these challenges, the contestant is usually asked to find a specific piece of text that may be hidden on the server or behind a webpage. This goal is called the flag, hence the name!

Jeopardy format means that there are separate tasks split into different categories.

HACK BASICS: Practice

We decided to split our lessons into theory and practice. This time we will learn the basics of low-level programming and solve some tasks related to the previously discussed topics.

Allowed programming languages: C, C++, Rust, assembly or any other that compiles to native machine code and provides manual memory management.

Please take a laptop with a UNIX-like operating system (GNU/Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, etc), *BSD, MasOC and others).

Spontaneous introduction to parser generators

Parser generators let you avoid dealing with parser internal state and focus on what's really important: structure of your expression language.

The goal of the workshop is to construct a parser for arithmetic expressions, e.g. (-1 + 2) / 3 * 4 using NearleyJS

We will talk about:

- regular expressions and when not to use them
- formal grammars and how to define them in Backus–Naur notation
- operator precedence, fixity and associativeness
- backtracking and time complexity of parsers
