๐ Excel Basics #10 โ SUM() Function
The SUM() function is one of the most commonly used Excel functions. It quickly adds numbers without writing long formulas.
๐ What is the SUM() Function?
SUM() adds the values in one or more cells.
Syntax:
=SUM(number1, [number2], ...)
You can use numbers, cell references, or ranges.
๐ Example 1 โ Add Individual Numbers
Formula:
=SUM(10,20,30)
Result: 60
๐ Example 2 โ Add Cell Values
A
100
200
300
Formula:
=SUM(A2,A3,A4)
Result: 600
๐ Example 3 โ Add a Range
Instead of selecting each cell individually, use a range.
Formula:
=SUM(A2:A10)
This adds all values from A2 to A10.
๐ Example 4 โ Add Multiple Ranges
Formula:
=SUM(A2:A5,C2:C5)
This adds both ranges together.
๐ Real-World Example
Product Sales
Laptop 50000
Mouse 5000
Keyboard 8000
Monitor 25000
Formula:
=SUM(B2:B5)
Result: 88000
๐ AutoSum Shortcut
Excel can automatically insert the SUM() function.
Go to: Home โ AutoSum (โ)
Or use the shortcut: Alt + =
Excel automatically selects the nearby range.
๐ Common Mistakes
โข Including blank cells unintentionally.
โข Selecting the wrong range.
โข Typing numbers as text (they won't be added).
โ
Best Practices
โข Use ranges (A2:A100) instead of listing individual cells.
โข Double-check the selected range before pressing Enter.
โข Use AutoSum (Alt + =) to save time.
โข Keep related numbers together in one column or row for easier calculations.
