๐ Excel Basics #9 โ Your First Formula in Excel
Formulas are the heart of Excel. They allow you to perform calculations automatically instead of doing them manually.
๐ What is a Formula?
A formula is an expression that tells Excel to calculate a result.
Every formula in Excel must start with an equal sign "=".
Example:
"=10+20"
Result: 30
๐ Using Cell References
Instead of typing numbers directly, you can refer to cells.
Example:
A2: 100
B2: 50
C2: "=A2+B2"
Result in C2: 150
If you change A2 from 100 to 200, the result automatically updates to 250.
This is why using cell references is better than typing values directly.
๐ Basic Arithmetic Operators
Excel supports the following operators:
โข "+" โ Addition
โข "-" โ Subtraction
โข "_" โ Multiplication
โข "/" โ Division
โข "^" โ Power (Exponent)
Examples:
โข "=A2+B2" โ Add values
โข "=A2-B2" โ Subtract values
โข "=A2B2" โ Multiply values
โข "=A2/B2" โ Divide values
โข "=A2ยฒ" โ Square the value in A2
๐ Order of Operations
Excel follows the standard mathematical order:
1. Parentheses "()"
2. Exponents "^"
3. Multiplication & Division "_" "/"
4. Addition & Subtraction "+" "-"
Example:
"=10+5โ"
Result: 20
Because multiplication is performed first.
To change the order:
"=(10+5)โ"
Result: 30
๐ก Real-World Example
Product: Laptop
Price B2: 50000
Quantity C2: 2
Total D2: "=B2C2"
Result: 100000
Whenever the Price or Quantity changes, the Total updates automatically.
โ
Best Practices
โข Always start formulas with "=".
โข Use cell references instead of hardcoding values.
โข Use parentheses for complex calculations.
โข Double-check formulas before copying them to other cells.
Mastering formulas is the first step toward becoming an Excel expert.
