๐ Excel Basics #4 โ Understanding Cells & Ranges
A cell stores a single piece of data, while a range is a group of two or more cells. Most Excel formulas and features work with ranges.
๐ What is a Cell?
โข A cell is the intersection of a row and a column.
โข Each cell has a unique address.
Examples:
โข "A1"
โข "B5"
โข "D10"
๐ What is a Range?
A range is a collection of cells.
Examples:
โข "A1:A10" โ Cells A1 through A10
โข "A1:C10" โ All cells from A1 to C10
โข "B2:D5" โ A rectangular group of cells
๐ Why are Ranges Important?
Ranges are used in almost every Excel formula.
Examples:
โข "=SUM(A1:A10)" โ Adds all values from A1 to A10.
โข "=AVERAGE(B2:B20)" โ Calculates the average.
โข "=MAX(C1:C15)" โ Returns the highest value.
โข "=COUNT(D1:D100)" โ Counts cells containing numbers.
๐ Selecting a Range
โข Click and drag your mouse across cells.
โข Or click the first cell, hold Shift, and click the last cell.
โข Press Ctrl + A to select the entire data region.
๐ก Example:
Product | Sales
Laptop | 50000
Mouse | 800
Keyboard | 1500
To calculate total sales:
"=SUM(B2:B4)"
Result: 52300
โ
Quick Tip:
โข Instead of selecting cells one by one, use ranges. It makes formulas shorter, easier to read, and simpler to maintain.
