Abstract — the consumer-focused Ethereum Layer 2 built by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo — will shut down on December 15.

The team cited:

Abstract says it processed more than 325M transactions and created over 4M wallets.

But the economics still didn’t work.

This comes only days after Blast announced its own shutdown.

⚙️ GLAMSTERDAM IS NOW LIVE ON SEPOLIA

Ethereum’s next major upgrade has officially activated on the Sepolia testnet.

The test includes a massive jump in block capacity:

60M → 200M gas.

Glamsterdam also brings major architectural changes including:

• Enshrined proposer-builder separation
• Block-level Access Lists
• New gas-pricing mechanics

This is still a testnet deployment — Ethereum mainnet has NOT upgraded yet.

But one of the biggest rehearsals before Glamsterdam mainnet is now underway.

Hong Kong fintech Qupital has launched an onchain lending protocol for e-commerce businesses.

The system combines:

• AI credit monitoring
• Ethereum smart contracts
• USDC settlement
• Automated loan operations

Instead of traditional banking rails handling every step, smart contracts can deploy USDC directly to qualifying merchants.

The target market is real-world trade finance — not crypto-native leverage.

Another example of Ethereum moving deeper into actual business credit infrastructure.

🛡 ETHEREUM WANTS TRANSACTIONS THAT CAN ENFORCE THEIR OWN OUTCOME

The Ethereum Foundation is exploring a new security mechanism called native transaction assertions.

The idea is powerful:

Before signing, a user could define rules such as:

• Minimum tokens received
• Maximum amount spent
• No unexpected approvals
• Specific contracts must remain unchanged

If the final transaction outcome violates those rules, the execution reverts.

EIP-7906 is one possible implementation.

It is not approved yet — but it could make Ethereum transactions much harder to exploit through malicious interfaces or unexpected state changes.

⚙️ GLAMSTERDAM GETS A LAST-MINUTE FIX BEFORE TODAY’S BIG TEST

Ethereum developers have released an urgent update to Prysm just hours before Glamsterdam activates on Sepolia.

The issue:

Some validators could have kept producing blocks at Sepolia’s old 60M gas limit.

The fix automatically pushes them toward the planned:

200 MILLION GAS limit.

That matters because today’s test is specifically designed to see whether Ethereum can reliably handle blocks more than 3x larger.

Sepolia activation is scheduled for around 14:53 Portugal time.

Mainnet is NOT upgrading today.

🏦 SEC CLEARS THE WAY FOR A 3X ETHER ETF

The SEC has approved a Cboe rule change allowing Volatility Shares to list a fund targeting 3x the DAILY performance of Ether futures.

The approval also covers similar leveraged products for Bitcoin, gold, silver, oil and natural gas.

Important distinction:

This is not a 3x spot ETH ETF.

The product uses futures and resets its leverage daily — meaning gains AND losses can be amplified dramatically.

No launch date has been announced yet.

Wall Street’s ETH product lineup keeps getting more sophisticated.

Glamsterdam is scheduled to activate on Sepolia on October 6.

The upgrade brings major protocol changes including:

⚠️ ETHEREUM L2 BLAST IS SHUTTING DOWN

Blast has announced it will wind down its Ethereum Layer 2 because operating costs now exceed network revenue.

Users are being asked to withdraw assets back to Ethereum mainnet.

The normal Blast interface is expected to remain available until October 26.

After that, withdrawals will require direct interaction with the bridge contracts.

Blast once held more than $2B in TVL.

Now its shutdown is becoming one of the clearest reminders yet:

An L2 still needs sustainable economics.

🔐 ETHEREUM LAUNCHES PRIVATE PAYMENTS FOR AI APIs

The Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project have launched zkAPI on Ethereum mainnet.

Users deposit ETH, USDC or other credits into an Ethereum vault, then use zero-knowledge proofs to pay for API usage without revealing which deposit funded the request.

The first major use case:

Private payments for AI models.

The provider sees the request.

The payment layer sees the spend.

Neither has to know who paid.

Ethereum privacy is moving beyond wallets and transfers.

U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs ended last week with another $17.3M in net outflows on October 2.

That followed:

🏦 THE SEC PROPOSES A NEW PATH FOR INSTITUTIONS TO CUSTODY ETH

The SEC has proposed a new regulatory framework for investment advisers and regulated funds holding crypto assets.

Among the proposed changes:

• Crypto self-custody could be allowed under certain conditions
• State trust companies could serve as custodians
• Funds could gain access to a broader range of crypto investment strategies

For institutional ETH, custody has long been one of the biggest regulatory bottlenecks.

Important: this is a proposal — NOT a final rule.

But the direction is clear:

Traditional asset managers are getting a more defined path into crypto custody.

🔥 ETHEREUM’S STAKING REWARD BURN PLAN HAS BEEN PULLED

EIP-8363 has officially been withdrawn from consideration for Hegotá.

The proposal would have burned an increasing share of validator rewards as more ETH entered staking.

Its authors say industry participants and Ethereum core contributors convinced them that changing ETH issuance policy shouldn’t be decided inside a normal fork-scoping process.

The debate isn’t dead.

A separate process focused specifically on Ethereum issuance is now planned, with discussions expected to continue through EthCC in April.

Ethereum monetary policy is getting its own conversation.

🔐 PRIVATE API PAYMENTS JUST WENT LIVE ON ETHEREUM

The Ethereum Foundation has introduced zkAPI — a system designed to let users pay for APIs without revealing their identity.

Here’s how it works:

Users deposit credits into an Ethereum vault, then prove they’re allowed to spend those credits using zero-knowledge proofs.

The API provider sees the request.

The payment system sees the spend.

But neither can link the two together.

zkAPI was built by the Open Anonymity Project with the Ethereum Foundation — and it’s already live on Ethereum Mainnet.

Privacy is becoming infrastructure.
