"It is never advisable to learn how to open the door of the Invisible unless one also learns how to close and lock it. It is relatively rare for the Invisible to come in search of human beings. But if we begin to study occultism, or even dabble in it, sooner or later we are bound to obtain results, assuming, of course, that the system we are using contains the seeds of effectiveness.
In the case of a person coming to the Path for the first time, progress is necessarily slow and laborious; but a soul that has taken initiation in a previous incarnation can reopen latent psychic faculties so rapidly that the problem of maintaining the harmonized coordination of the personality becomes serious.
It is extremely common for a person making their first contact with the occult movement to experience a psychic disturbance. This is sometimes attributed to malevolent influences, sometimes to evil entities. Neither of these inferences may be accurate. There is a third possibility, which is responsible for by far the largest percentage of victims – the mere fact that consciousness is disturbed by an unfamiliar force. How common it is to see a feverish and restless child during the first few days of a seaside vacation. He is not necessarily becoming ill from a disease. The harsh air, the unfamiliar food, and the excitement of his new surroundings are disturbing his sensitive physical equilibrium. The same occurs when the neophyte is disturbed at the beginning of his occult training. The unfamiliar vibrations are upsetting him, and he is having an attack of occult indigestion. In both cases, the treatment is the same – temporary restriction of the diet that has caused the disturbance."
