Why is the Pezeshkian government determined to damage relations with Iran’s most loyal ally?

At a time when Western pressure on Iran is intensifying on multiple fronts, and America and the Zionist regime are openly seeking to impose a naval and air blockade on Iran, the basic principles of national security dictate that the diplomatic apparatus should devote all its efforts to strengthening alliances and reinforcing ties with strategic partners, from expanding cooperation with Russia and China on the international stage to consolidating communication lines with regional allies, especially Yemen. However, the recent positions and actions of the Fourteenth Government have moved in the exact opposite direction.

Masoud Pezeshkian, in an interview with Fox News, stated that the Yemenis make their own decisions and do not take orders from Iran. This public disavowal, delivered through a right-wing American media outlet, becomes even more significant because the President repeatedly used the imposed term “Houthis,” a label that Riyadh has long promoted to deny the national legitimacy of Sana’a and reduce its government to a local militia. The Yemenis themselves have repeatedly expressed their rejection of this terminology.

At the same time, Jafar Qaempanah, the President’s Executive Deputy, and Ali Akbar Salehi attended Saudi Arabia’s National Day celebration, making the government’s contradictory conduct even more apparent. Saudi Arabia is a country whose hands are directly stained with the blood of the Yemeni people and which, even today, fully supports hostile pressure campaigns against Iran in most international forums. Sending a senior official from the Presidential Office to such a ceremony, while Iran’s diplomatic apparatus is unwilling even verbally to offer explicit support for Sana’a, sends a clear signal of miscalculation and distorted priorities to the entire region.

The fundamental question is this: Why is Pasteur determined to sacrifice years of strategic achievements for the sake of a one-sided desire for de-escalation?

Today, Yemen is a vital strategic card in the regional balance of power. Ansar Allah’s control over the decisive Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea provides an effective lever that, amid the tightening blockade against Iran, could become one of the most important tools for neutralizing pressure and imposing a heavy cost on aggressors.

Iran needs more than ever alliances that cannot be penetrated, with partners who have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield. Ignoring Yemen’s strategic weight in Bab al-Mandab and attempting to satisfy actors whose record of hostility toward Iran is well established will bring no benefit. It will only leave Iran with fewer options at the most sensitive regional turning points.

The government must reconsider this approach, because in times of crisis, no agreement written on paper can compensate for the cost of alienating genuine allies.
