Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mousa Shubairi Zanjani (r) (1928–2026) has returned to his Lord in the past hours, marking the passing of one of the greatest contemporary Shia Marja’ al-Taqlid and the senior-most scholars of the Holy Seminary of Qom.

For decades, he stood among the foremost authorities of the Hawza, renowned for his extraordinary mastery of Ilm al-Rijal, Fiqh, and Usul al-Fiqh. His scholarship was distinguished by exceptional intellectual rigor, meticulous research, and an unwavering commitment to preserving the authenticity of Islamic jurisprudence, Hadith studies, and the classical sciences of the Ahl al-Bayt (A).

Throughout his lifetime, Grand Ayatollah Shubairi Zanjani maintained deep scholarly and personal relationships with many of the leading figures of the contemporary Shia world. He enjoyed the trust and respect of Imam Khomeini, who granted him religious authorization (ijazah), and shared longstanding ties with Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti, Imam Musa al-Sadr, and Imam Ali Khamenei. He also served as one of the teachers of Imam Sayyid Mujtaba Khamenei.

He dedicated generations of his life to teaching advanced lessons in Fiqh and Usul, guiding students and scholars, and leading congregational prayers at the Holy Shrine of Sayyidah Fatima Masumeh (S) in Qom. His teachings, writings, and preservation of the sciences of the Hawza shaped countless scholars and left an enduring legacy across the Shia world. His passing marks the loss of one of the most influential authorities in Fiqh and Ilm al-Rijal, and a towering figure of the Qom Seminary whose legacy will continue to guide future generations of scholars.

May Allah have mercy upon him, elevate his station, accept his lifelong service to Islam, and grant patience to his family, students, and the wider Hawza community.
