«A sonic tinkerer who makes music out of anything at hand — from modular and granular synthesizers and 1980s children’s electronic toys to warped vocal samples thrown into smokey loops — Egor Aksenov long crafted experimental electronic music under the ironic alias Liquid Rancher, a name suggesting a nature-inflected fluidity, perhaps inspired by the streams and forests of his native Korolëv. He has recently traded it for Ego Axe, moving closer to the self only to slice through it.

The question of the ego points to the psychedelic vein running through his music, whose rich, grainy textures recall the 1990s experiments of Coil and Boards of Canada, as well as the postmodern lyricism of Oneohtrix Point Never at his most jubilant. Experimental and introspective, the music returns to laidback beats as to a hearth, guided by soft kicks along the sunlit rails of a kind of instrumental hip-hop that evokes working-class New York neighborhoods à la DJ Olive.
