The Orders’ greatest triumph—and their darkest curse — is the technology of transferring consciousness into the Deep Realm. Each transition destroys the personality, erases the soul, leaving only an empty shell, an Avatar, controlled from our world.

In the Orders’ laboratories, beings capable of surviving in the Deep Realm are created—hybrids of human and animal, monsters from legends and nightmares. Each such creation is a personality, a soul trapped in a body made for war.

It is the strength of their erased personality alone that determines their ability to resist the madness of the Deep Realm. So we train them relentlessly before the transition, unaware of the fate that awaits them.

I keep recalling Yuan’s eyes and how life vanished from them in an instant during the transition into the Deep Realm… I continue to ask myself: who are the real monsters here?

But I have to keep my faith.
