Story should create its own symbolism within its own structure. Our thoughts on Guilt is what creates content, creates moments where the audience can understand the turmoil our character experiences in "live time" without having to explain the source. What we create should be MOMENTS OF GUILT and frustration and all the attendant feelings surrounding the issue. Thereby any object we choose can serve as a symbol or avatar of the moment, but always bear in mind that it's not sufficient to detail the symbol alone
How the characters interact with the symbol is where the rubber meets the road.
