Since 2000, child deaths have dropped by more than half and stillbirths by over a third, fuelled by sustained investments in child survival worldwide.

In 2022, the world reached a historic milestone when child deaths dropped slightly below 5 million for the first time.

But too many children are still being lost to preventable causes.

From tackling malaria to preventing stillbirths and ensuring evidence-based care for the tiniest babies, we can continue to make a difference for millions of families: https://bit.ly/4kTTBUV

#MentalHealth is not a privilege. It is fundamental to health and human dignity.

In many parts of the world, mental health systems are outdated, underfunded, and misaligned with evidence-based practices and human rights standards.

As a result, many people suffer due to inadequate care, exclusion, and a lack of access to the support they need.

This new WHO guidance helps countries to design and implement equitable, effective, and enduring mental health services: https://bit.ly/4lgVjjk

1 in 2 people suffer from oral diseases. However, only some are covered by essential oral health services.

On #WorldOralHealthDay, we call on all countries to reprioritise oral health care as part of their #HealthForAll commitment.

The resumption of hostilities in #Gaza puts millions of lives at risk again.

Today we lost one of our own. My heartfelt condolences to UNOPS for the death of their colleague.

This incident follows strikes that have killed hundreds of people, including children.

We call for the immediate resumption of the ceasefire, for the release of all hostages, and for the protection of humanitarian workers and civilians.

The US Administration has been extremely generous over many years, and it is within its rights to decide what it supports, and to what extent.

But the abrupt cuts in funding from the US are putting at risk decades of progress in various health programmes across the world. We ask the US to engage in dialogue with affected countries so plans can be made to transition to more sustainable solutions, without disruptions that cost lives.

We call on other donors and the countries that have relied on US financing to step up -- to the extent they can.

We live in a world of multiple overlapping global crises, requiring a global response:
- wars and conflict
- disease outbreaks
- food insecurity
- poverty
- inequality
- the climate crisis

WHO is responding to many of these.

'Does it make America safer?’ — one of the three questions Secretary Rubio wants answered for each State Department policy and investment.

WHO is helping make Americans and everyone safer by working with all countries to stop infectious and deadly outbreaks, like Marburg and Ebola, at their source.

Cutting ties would make Americans unsafe.

Let's tighten global health security, together.

New WHO data show that a mother dies every 2 minutes because many pregnancy-related complications go undetected and untreated.

Haemorrhage – severe heavy bleeding – and hypertensive disorders like preeclampsia are the leading causes of these deaths.

If women have access to timely medical care, these deaths can be prevented.

This year, WHO has put maternal and child health as a top priority, urging world leaders to prioritise investing in health care for all mums and babies.

One of the greatest opportunities to strengthen the health sector lies within the health workforce itself: two-thirds of health workers are women.

By supporting health workers with training, decent working conditions, decent pay and leadership roles, we can improve gender equality and support countries on their journey towards #HealthForAll.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay to all women, and especially to my female colleagues and health workers who are saving lives every day.

It was a great pleasure to welcome former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to WHO Headquarters. She has been a longstanding champion for global health.

We had a very constructive discussion on the current state of global affairs, the challenges we face on various global health security fronts, the progress of the #PandemicAccord negotiations and the need to keep serving the world's most vulnerable.

1 in 8 people in the world live with obesity -- meaning that each and everyone of us knows someone with the condition.

Obesity can lead to various health problems - from diabetes to heart disease, bone and reproductive health, and cancer.

On #WorldObesityDay, WHO calls on everyone to:
- adopt healthier lifestyle habits, including physical activity, healthy meals, avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks;
- support people living with obesity and to stand up against stigma.

Governments also have a role to play in preventing the risks of obesity by enabling healthy environments and choices through their policies.

A five-day mass #polio vaccination in #Gaza concluded yesterday, reaching 602 795 children under 10 years of age.

The ceasefire allowed the health workers to reach more children than during previous vaccination rounds in 2024, including the children who may have been missed due to population movement and those who were unreachable due to insecurity.

Ending polio hinges on fully vaccinating every last child and ensuring uninterrupted access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, and proper nutrition.

But the medicine all children in Gaza need is lasting peace. WHO, UNICEF and partners continue to call for a lasting ceasefire that leads to long-term health and well-being.

Nearly 1.2 million people lose their lives on the world’s roads every year.

They set out on a regular trip – to work, to school, to go shopping, to see a friend or to go on holiday – but that journey becomes their last.

My call to Ministers attending the 4th Ministerial Conference on #RoadSafety: The solutions are not always easy or popular, but we know they work, they save lives and are a good long-term investment in sustainability and productivity: bit.ly/4i3Lt1O

Together, we can work for a world in which everyone reaches their destination safely.

For decades, WHO has worked with countries to #EndMalaria — 45 countries and 1 territory have been successful so far!

Hope towards a malaria-free world is rising with 25 of 83 endemic countries now reporting fewer than 10 cases per year.
