The 17s • Directed by Atieh Attarzadeh & Aslan Shahebrahimi • 2014 • Iran

The 17s follows the lives of a group of 17-year-olds who love acting and theatre. Each of them is given a camera to record themselves, and through these recordings a powerful and unforgettable image of adolescence emerges. These youths passionately strive for their dreams and to prove their uncompromising enthusiasm for acting.
Though the cinematography is simple, it is incredibly functional, and it captures both haunting and nostalgic moments well. This film is filled with adolescent humor and is a very enjoyable experiment to watch.

Our Brave Mama • By Bahman Farmanara

Centering on the life of Simin Behbahani, Our Brave Mama follows the life and artistic career of this well-known poet in the wake of tremendous changes in politics, society, and culture in Iran. The film features interviews with Behbahani and archival photographs of her life to help paint a picture of this influential Iranian poet and activist.

The climax of the documentary comes when Behbahani is shown reading her poetry aloud. Farmanara uses the kind of intimacy associated with the documentary style to shape an image of a woman who is affectionately referred to as the “Lioness of Iran."

The Cancelled Concert • Directed by Bahman Farmanara • 2011 • Iran

At a gathering, Parviz Yahaghi, one of Iran’s most famous composers and musicians, handed a box containing a selection of videocassettes to Bahman Farmanara. After Yahaghi’s death, Farmanara watched the tapes and realized that they were a record of Yahaghi’s daily life, shot by Yahaghi himself. The Cancelled Concert is an artistic mix of this footage, interwoven with interviews with prominent artists, such as Ahmadreza Ahmadi, Nawab Safam, and Bijan Taraghee.

This film balances Yahaghi's personal records with interviews and voice messages from Yahaghi’s lover to create a remarkable and sensitive portrayal of an artist’s life in solitude.

About Father, About Death • Directed by Farhad Behbahani • 2020

In the short docu-drama About Father, About Death, Farhad Behbahani honors the memory of his father, whom he lost to COVID-19. Behbahani crafts a contemporary, heart-wrenching tale of death in which he meticulously explores the emotional destabilization he encounters after experiencing this unforeseen loss.

By pairing his own voice over with close-ups of his father’s belongings, like an old cellphone, a comb, his fragrance, clothes, bags, shoes, and prayer beads, Behbahani shows how death makes ordinary things special. He subsequently traps us in an often unexplored zone of loss and grief and invites us to reexamine every aspect of life.

The Most Beautiful Country in the World • Directed by Zelimir Zilnik • 2018 • Austria

The Most Beautiful Country in the World centers on a group of immigrants in Austria who confront the country’s demanding administrative labyrinths in order to achieve legal status and residence. Their anxiety and ongoing attempts to assimilate into a new culture and learn the language show just how difficult it is to live in diaspora. Seemingly ordinary aspects of everyday life become essential, from German lessons, to boxing at the gym, to a visit to the Christmas market, to a search for an apartment or a job. In this new life, traditions from the immigrants’ homelands blend with Western realities.

The main protagonist of the film is twenty-three-year-old Bagher, who embarked on his journey from Afghanistan as a seventeen year old, leaving his family in the war-torn country. He is now perfectly integrated into his new society, but his tranquil life changes when his grandfather unexpectedly — and illegally — arrives in Vienna to inform Bagher that everyone else in the family has passed away. Besides the sadness that pervades the film, The Most Beautiful Country in the World explores a wide and complex range of human emotions and reveals the friendships Bagher has made. It demonstrates how a multicultural, open, and diversified society is indeed possible. This docudrama tackles irrefutably relevant global issues, highlighting the everyday lives of the individuals who live on the margins of society, who are often victims of inequality.
