About Father, About Death • Directed by Farhad Behbahani • 2020

In the short docu-drama About Father, About Death, Farhad Behbahani honors the memory of his father, whom he lost to COVID-19. Behbahani crafts a contemporary, heart-wrenching tale of death in which he meticulously explores the emotional destabilization he encounters after experiencing this unforeseen loss.

By pairing his own voice over with close-ups of his father’s belongings, like an old cellphone, a comb, his fragrance, clothes, bags, shoes, and prayer beads, Behbahani shows how death makes ordinary things special. He subsequently traps us in an often unexplored zone of loss and grief and invites us to reexamine every aspect of life.

The Most Beautiful Country in the World • Directed by Zelimir Zilnik • 2018 • Austria

The Most Beautiful Country in the World centers on a group of immigrants in Austria who confront the country’s demanding administrative labyrinths in order to achieve legal status and residence. Their anxiety and ongoing attempts to assimilate into a new culture and learn the language show just how difficult it is to live in diaspora. Seemingly ordinary aspects of everyday life become essential, from German lessons, to boxing at the gym, to a visit to the Christmas market, to a search for an apartment or a job. In this new life, traditions from the immigrants’ homelands blend with Western realities.

The main protagonist of the film is twenty-three-year-old Bagher, who embarked on his journey from Afghanistan as a seventeen year old, leaving his family in the war-torn country. He is now perfectly integrated into his new society, but his tranquil life changes when his grandfather unexpectedly — and illegally — arrives in Vienna to inform Bagher that everyone else in the family has passed away. Besides the sadness that pervades the film, The Most Beautiful Country in the World explores a wide and complex range of human emotions and reveals the friendships Bagher has made. It demonstrates how a multicultural, open, and diversified society is indeed possible. This docudrama tackles irrefutably relevant global issues, highlighting the everyday lives of the individuals who live on the margins of society, who are often victims of inequality.

Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time • Directed by Arash Kamali Sarvestani and Behrouz Boochani • 2017 • Papua New Guinea

Shot entirely on a smartphone, Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time reveals the banality and brutality of life found inside Australia’s Manus Regional Processing Center in Papua New Guinea. Having been forced to flee Iran due to his involvement in activism, Behrouz Boochani was intercepted by Australian authorities while attempting a boat crossing from Indonesia to Australia. He was then incarcerated in the Manus Island detention center. While there, he recorded the lives of the refugees using his smartphone, capturing footage that attested to the immense pain and suffering they experienced. In this high-security facility, various forms of purposeful oppression intersect to create friction and despair among the refugees, in many cases breaking their spirits.
This documentary above all criticizes how the Australian government punished asylum seekers on this remote island. However, it also clearly shows the beauty of the island’s locals and their culture; indeed, they too are victims under this system founded on colonialism. Rather than relying on violent scenes, the film makes use of interviews with the refugees, intermingled with stunning and powerful shots of nature found around the facility, to construct a poetic documentary.

Winners (1) • Directed by Omid Abdollahi • 2015

A sharp and captivating exploration of immigrants’ difficulty transitioning into a new life, Winners gives audiences a glimpse into the experiences of Iranians who participate in a lottery to win United States visas. The film follows two individuals: Shahriyar and Shahab. Shahriyar and his wife win the lottery and try their best to sell everything they own in order to move to America. While packing and essentially selling their life away, they grow doubtful and hesitant, wondering whether they are truly ready for this new challenge. On the other hand, even though Shahab and his wife and daughter also win the lottery, the embassy does not grant Shahab a visa, and his family is forced to immigrate to the US without him. He waits for three years to get a visa and reunite with his family.

This documentary is an unforgettable portrait of immigration, rife with moments of frustration, hopelessness, and sorrow. It is also a meditation on the meaning of home and one’s homeland and Iranians’ deep fondness for their country.

The Republic of Herrskog (1) • Directed by Hamed Alizadeh

An arresting study of exile and immigration, The Republic of Herrskog is an intense documentary that reveals the difficulties associated with displacement and finding a new home in Herrskog, Sweden, a village that embraces the immigrants that move there from different countries. This short work exposes the powerful and poignant reality of how it feels to live in exile.

The central character in the film is Stefan, who owns a small supermarket in Herrskog that welcomes all immigrants and refugees. His generosity, kindness, and eagerness to learn about different cultures and languages become the most moving aspect of the film. When he ultimately decides to close the shop, the immigrants with whom he connected are heartbroken. Despite its sharp and at times unsettling tone, the film does not hesitate to highlight the similarities between the demands of people from different cultures, rather than the differences.

The double feature “Limbo ” is now live on Docunight. You can watch this program and all our other documentaries by becoming a member via docunight.com

Men of Fire (2) • Directed by Sepideh Farsi • 2001

Following a group of firemen in Tehran, Men of Fire captures the harrowing, fire-related incidents that occur in the city and shows how the firemen courageously save people’s lives. This documentary begins with the rituals of Chaharshanbe-Soori, occurring on the last Tuesday of the year, when Iranians jump over fires built in the streets in celebration. This documentary questions these rituals, asserting that, despite their cultural significance, they are in fact harmful to both the people and the city. The film focuses on the tragic events that highlight the devastating battle between life and death. It is a formidable and eye-opening documentary that exposes the defiant resilience of firemen.
