The Unfinished Childhood • Directed by Nasser Saffarian • 2020 • Iran

The Unfinished Childhood takes a look at children’s poetry from the last few decades, featuring poems about war and religion to poems on the meaning of life, tragedy, and humor. The documentary’s setup is straightforward, with Saffarian interviewing the pioneers in children’s poetry, but the view of the world of children is anything but simplistic. The poets’ familiarity with children and their world and its complexities gives the film both its specificity and its approachability, and it is noteworthy how Saffarian takes his time to explore the world of children with such delicacy and meticulousness. The interviews closely analyze children's mentality and idealism and how these characteristics impacted the poets' work. Footage of children dancing to popular songs and the added scenes from old children’s films seem almost to function as memories and add a vivid and heartwarming quality to the entire film.

Platform (2) • Directed by Sahar Mosayebi • 2021 • Iran

Sahar Mosayebi’s Platform follows three Iranian sisters from the small town of Semirom as they arduously train to become wushu champions. A sense of warmth pervades the film, and a feeling of uneasy and humane compassion enriches the entire narrative while revealing an unexpected atmosphere of pain.
The sisters are driven by competitive ambition, but each has a different personality. This documentary focuses on the personal lives of these sisters and sheds light on the tension between the modesty demanded of women by the Islamic Republic and the fierceness and determination it takes to compete at an elite level. The sisters’ athleticism grew from a life of poverty and was honed by a father who treated them like boys. A revelation about their relationship with their parents is revealed in an achingly understated way and helps to explain some of their drive to succeed. This documentary is filled with unforgettable moments of intimacy, intense and emotional scenes of competition, and humorous dialogue between the sisters. As a whole, it is both enjoyable and unforgettable.

Be Like Others • Directed by Tanaz Eshaghian • 2008 • Canada/Iran/UK/USA

Be Like Others centers on a group of young men who decide to undergo sex reassignment surgery in a country with strict social views and traditional values. While homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran, sex change operations are legal under religious law. Tanaz Eshaghian’s camera follows along as these young men prepare for their transformation and get ready to be “reborn” into a new life. The rhythm of the film and the interweaving of emotional interviews create an atmosphere of gentle directness that forces viewers to truly see the lives and plights of transgender people.

Although Eshaghian’s mode of telling this story may at first appear simple, it visually reveals its nuances and complexities by means of a slowed-down, acute, and patiently observant sense of compassion and care. The way in which the drama unfolds in this documentary is melodramatic and sculpts an arresting portrait of the transgender experience in Iran.

Part of the double feature “We’re here, We’re Queer” is now live on Docunight. You can watch this program and all our other documentaries by becoming a member via docunight.com

Only Voice Remains • Directed by Makez Rikweda and Sol Rikweda • 2019 • UK

Only Voice Remains is a documentary that centers on the life of Forugh Farrokhzad, a controversial modernist poet and iconoclast who wrote from a woman’s perspective. Her poetry reflects the thoughts and emotions of women with both delicacy and boldness. Even though her writing is now more than fifty years old, it still resonates powerfully with many people.

The film features reenactments of Farrokhzad’s interviews, her intimate love life, the moments in which she wrote poetry, and the times when she suffered from depression. Rikweda incorporates interviews with poets and literary scholars into her documentary, in which these individuals comment on the influence of Farrokhzad’s work on culture and the people’s imagination. This short film, in sum, is a mélange of poetic sequences, reenactments, and interviews that come together to paint a powerful image of a legendary female poet who was overlooked by the literary canon influenced by the patriarchy.
