Only Voice Remains • Directed by Makez Rikweda and Sol Rikweda • 2019 • UK

Only Voice Remains is a documentary that centers on the life of Forugh Farrokhzad, a controversial modernist poet and iconoclast who wrote from a woman’s perspective. Her poetry reflects the thoughts and emotions of women with both delicacy and boldness. Even though her writing is now more than fifty years old, it still resonates powerfully with many people.

The film features reenactments of Farrokhzad’s interviews, her intimate love life, the moments in which she wrote poetry, and the times when she suffered from depression. Rikweda incorporates interviews with poets and literary scholars into her documentary, in which these individuals comment on the influence of Farrokhzad’s work on culture and the people’s imagination. This short film, in sum, is a mélange of poetic sequences, reenactments, and interviews that come together to paint a powerful image of a legendary female poet who was overlooked by the literary canon influenced by the patriarchy.

Iranian Journey • Directed by Maysoon Pachachi • 2000 • Germany/Iran/United Kingdom

Iranian Journey is a documentary road movie with Massoumeh Soltan Baloghie, the first woman long-distance bus driver in Iran and, probably, the whole Islamic world.
On a 22-hour bus trip north to south across Iran from Tehran to Bandar Abbas, Massoumeh talks about her life and aspirations. Her passengers chat, eat, sleep and tell their stories, and we meet people in the road stop cafés, on the sides of the road and in the cities en route.
In Tehran, we speak to women of different ages and classes about their work, life and aspirations – a painter, a musician, TV factory workers, law students, editor of a feminist magazine and many others including Masoumeh’s 2 teenage daughters, Zahra and Fatima.

Touran Khanom (1) • Directed by Rakhshan Banietemad & Mojtaba Mirtahmasb • 2018 • Iran

Centering on the life and career of Touran Mirhadi, the pioneering educator and legendary architect of the childhood institution in Iran, Touran Khanom reveals the efforts of a woman whose sole aim was to enrich the system of education and culture for the good of Iran’s children. As a founder of Farhad School, the Children’s Book Council, and the Encyclopedia for Young People, Mirhadi was ambitious, compassionate, and full of life. This worthwhile documentary paints a vivid and lasting picture of a woman who never abandoned her vision. Banietemad and Mirtahmasb draw upon the most subtle aspects of Touran Mirhadi’s life to flesh out her character and create an experience that is both moving and pleasant.
