Advanced algorithms for 3D electrical tomography imaging of concrete
Repair and maintenance of existing concrete structures has become an urgent and critical problem in recent years. In the UK alone, about £50 billion/year is spent to preserve aging structures. In this context, reliable non-destructive monitoring techniques are urgently needed to inform repair and maintenance strategies. At present, however, many non-destructive techniques offer limited insight into the internal condition (internal damage) of concrete structures.
This project aims to determine the feasibility of “looking inside” large concrete elements using 3D electrical tomography. To achieve this, computational algorithms will be developed that will set the most favourable conditions for successful imaging of damage in large concrete elements. The project will build on recent advancements in artificial intelligence and computational inverse problems.
The PhD will be supervised by Dr Giacomo Torelli and Dr Danny Smyl and developed in collaboration with the University of South Alabama.
Start Date: The successful candidate will start as soon as possible and by October 2022.
The position will be closed when a suitable candidate is selected
For informal enquiries please get in touch with Dr Giacomo Torelli (g.torelli@sheffield.ac.uk).
Funding Notes
• For home (UK) students, a fully-funded PhD scholarship is available for 3.5 years. This includes:
o UK home tuition fees.
o Maintenance stipend: starting from ~£15,500 per annum with annual increases.
• For International (non UK) students, the difference between international and home fees (currently ~£20,000 per annum) will need to be covered through self-funding or alternative sources of funding.
