How in the world did they manage to make the most David Cronenberg movie ever without David Cronenberg's involvement in it?

Don't y'all hate it when the brain-eating monster you keep in your bathtub suddenly decides to leave and eat brains? Like, come on, that's not why I keep you! I keep you to.. Uhh.. Idk? I'm a history freak?

Why did no one tell me it's a gay dark romance movie? Possessive, oddly sexual, with drugging and addiction... And a sprinkle of humiliation. Just as god intended. Perfect representation of abusive relationship and the exact portrayal of abusers we deserve: shriveled up brain-eating monster that isolates the victim from people closest to them, holds anything and everything over the their head, yet has no power without them.
