Documented UN-linked trafficking / sexual exploitation scandals (not exhaustive)

1) Haiti (MINUSTAH) “sex ring” (2004–2007)

An Associated Press–reported internal UN investigation described Sri Lankan peacekeepers accused of running a sex ring exploiting Haitian children, with major accountability gaps afterward.

2) Democratic Republic of Congo widespread exploitation (MONUC era, mid-2000s)

UN missions in the DRC became synonymous with recurring allegations of sexual exploitation, including minors, and “transactional” abuse patterns tied to power imbalance and poverty (repeatedly flagged across UN/press reporting over the years).

3) Central African Republic (MINUSCA) child sexual abuse (2014–2016+)

Serious allegations emerged involving peacekeepers and child victims; the scandal became one of the most notorious modern UN mission failures and triggered investigations, repatriations, and political fallout.

4) Kosovo (UNMIK era) trafficking markets enabled by the postwar ecosystem

Rights investigators reported Kosovo becoming a trafficking hub in the postwar period, with the broader “international presence” and impunity dynamics repeatedly criticized; Amnesty documented the trafficking pipeline and the context around the international administration.

5) Systemic warning: the UN’s own “Zeid Report” era

A major UN-commissioned reform push (often discussed as the “Zeid” framework) was driven by recognition that sexual exploitation/abuse in peacekeeping had become recurring and structurally hard to police because troops fall under home-country jurisdiction.
