⛈ Heavy rain hits Cyprus from early morning: Yellow Warning in effect until 6:00 PM for thunderstorms, hail and strong winds

Heavy rainfall has been affecting several parts of Cyprus since the early hours of October 4. The Meteorological Service has issued a Yellow Warning, valid from 3:30 AM until 6:00 PM.

⚠️Locally severe thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with possible hail and sudden strong winds. Rainfall intensity may exceed 35 mm per hour in some areas.

Temperatures today will reach around 27°C along the coast and inland, and about 17°C in the higher mountains.

🌧Unsettled weather is expected to continue into the beginning of next week. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon, mainly over inland and mountainous areas.

✈️ TUI flight to Paphos hit by flock of birds — flash seen near engine

TUI flight TOM5TN, travelling from Cardiff to Paphos, was forced to return to the airport shortly after take-off after the aircraft struck a flock of birds.

🎥 Passenger footage shows dozens of birds flying close to the aircraft, followed moments later by a bright flash near the engine under the right wing. Some passengers also reported smelling burning inside the cabin.

The crew turned the aircraft around and landed safely back in Cardiff at around 2:52 pm, where airport fire and rescue services were waiting.

All passengers and crew were reported safe.

The runway was temporarily closed following the incident and reopened at approximately 3:22 pm, after which normal airport operations resumed.

A military frigate has appeared in the waters off Larnaca. Its presence is being linked to ongoing measures aimed at strengthening Cyprus’ defence capabilities.

🏫 Couple secretly lived in a Nicosia school classroom — caught after oversleeping

▪️An unusual incident occurred at a secondary school in Nicosia. A man and a woman allegedly entered the building through a damaged window and spent nights inside a classroom, where they had even brought a mattress. To avoid detection, they reportedly damaged an alarm cable.

▪️The pair were discovered by accident after they overslept one morning and failed to leave before the cleaners arrived. After police were called, the woman allegedly threatened to damage the school before both suspects fled, taking a computer monitor with them.

No other serious damage or missing property was reported. Police are continuing their search for the pair.

🔊 183 homes damaged after storm in Cyprus: how to apply for assistance

Following the severe weather on 29 August, authorities have begun recording the damage. Preliminary data shows that 183 residential properties were affected across 20 communities and three municipalities, with the largest number of cases reported in the Nicosia district. Roads and other public infrastructure were also damaged.

Residents wishing to report losses must send their name, address, phone number and photos of the damage to the relevant District Administration by Monday, 7 September.

Claims can be submitted for damage to homes, commercial properties and vehicles. The amount and conditions of the one-off compensation will be decided later by the Council of Ministers.

🦊A fox met a mouflon by the water — and the mouflon didn’t even flinch

📸 A camera operated by the Cyprus Game and Fauna Service captured a rare moment: an adult male Cyprus mouflon stopped for a drink when a fox cautiously approached.

🐏 The mouflon calmly continued drinking and barely reacted to the unexpected visitor. Experts explain that a fox usually poses no serious threat to a healthy adult mouflon, so the animal had little reason to show alarm.

Cyprus’ Nissi Beach Named One of the World’s Most Instagram-Popular Beaches

Ayia Napa has gained another reason to attract tourists: its famous Nissi Beach has ranked 11th worldwide among beaches that appear most frequently on Instagram. This is the highest position achieved by any beach in Cyprus.

The study did not simply compare the total number of posts. Instead, it measured the number of Instagram posts relative to the length of each beach. Nissi Beach had around 258,000 posts along a coastline of roughly 675 metres, which works out at about 383 posts per metre.

Another well-known Cypriot beach, Fig Tree Bay in Protaras, ranked 60th. It recorded almost 60,000 posts, or around 73 posts per metre.

The top spot went to Bondi Beach in Australia, with more than two million posts. Other leading beaches included Venice Beach in the United States, Coogee Beach in Australia, Waikiki in Hawaii, and Padang Padang in Indonesia.

The ranking method is also worth noting: shorter but highly popular beaches have an advantage. That is one of the reasons why compact Nissi Beach, with its sandy shoreline and iconic small island, managed to climb so high.

☀️ Solar canopies proposed over roads in Limassol

Limassol is discussing an initiative to install canopies fitted with solar panels above major roads, stretching from the Omonia area to Germasogeia. Supporters say the project could generate clean electricity, provide shade for motorists and cyclists, and reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

The proposal suggests starting with a pilot project and carrying out the necessary studies to assess whether existing urban spaces can be used for more sustainable infrastructure.

🚗💥 Three-Car Crash in Paphos Leaves One Person Injured

A traffic accident involving three vehicles occurred on Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue in Paphos on Friday evening, near the CYTA offices.

According to initial reports, all three vehicles sustained significant damage in the collision. One woman suffered minor injuries and received medical assistance at the scene.

Police said that two of the vehicles were driven by foreign nationals, while the third driver was a Greek Cypriot.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash and working to determine its exact cause.
