π Day 4
- Your Data Doesn't Travel as One Big Thing
Imagine: Platypus wants to send another Platypus a giant box of cookies πͺπ¦
It would be pretty inconvenient to send the whole box at once.
So instead, we split it into lots of smaller boxes
That's basically what happens to data on the Internet..
A message, image, video, or part of a website can be split into many small pieces called packets.
Each packet contains some of the actual data, plus information that helps the network deliver it to the right place.
And here's the clever part:
- The packets don't necessarily have to take the same route.
- One packet might go through one router.
- Another might take a completely different path.
- They can even arrive at different times.
- When they reach the destination, the receiving computer puts everything back together.
So when you send a photo to someone, you're not really sending one photo through the Internet.
You're sending lots of tiny pieces that eventually become a photo again.
It's basically the Internet saying:
"Why send one giant cookie when we can send 500 tiny cookies?" πͺ
And honestly..
That's a pretty good system.
Next: How does the Internet know which computer those packets are supposed to reach? π
