I recently found out that grants for creative people are being handed out in TON. I asked the Nothing team where their money for these artist grants comes from. Here’s what I found out.
ℹ️ Nothing is an independent media project around artists that grew out of the Notcoin ecosystem. They run a fund where patrons vote on which projects get money. It’s funded by patron subscriptions and 30% of every sale in their market. There are no investors or tokens behind it.
➡️ The first round took place in August and funded 2 projects. The second one is open now:
▫️ a $6,000 fund has already been raised: 3 projects get up to $2,000 each
▫️ applications are open until October 16
▫️ any format works: music, books, film, objects, hardware
▫️ you can pitch your own idea or nominate an artist you know, and the nominator gets rewarded too if Nothing ends up working with that artist
▫️ the 10 best pitches go to a patron vote, which starts within days after the deadline
🤔 The main thing I learned: these grants are not an investment. There’s nothing to pay back + the rights to the work stay with the artist. In return, patrons get a mention and a behind-the-scenes look at how the work is going. If the work is later sold through Nothing, 70% goes to the artist and 30% goes back to the fund. In my opinion, that’s a decent deal.
➡️ They’ve also launched the not.online tools:
▫️ a page that collects your channels, projects and links under your own address like not.online/cultofnot
▫️ a merch market: Nothing handles delivery, packing, payments, tax and refunds (for a 30% cut), and the seller gets 70%
▫️ soon they’ll add a post scheduler and all sorts of other stuff.
🤔 Personally, I think the tools are mainly for people who run an audience: artists, authors, influencers. I know some of you reading this are among them. A regular user doesn’t need this. That said, some might like patronage: for $9 a month you decide who gets a grant and whose art comes out first + you get drops that aren’t publicly available. Then again, given the state of TON, not everyone will be ready to pay even $9 for that.
👉 But if you have an idea worth bringing to life, this gets more interesting. You can apply until October 16. And if you’d rather decide who gets the money, you can become a patron 😉
💬 What do you think of this grant format?

🤝 — Oh, I happen to know an artist
❤️ — Thinking about becoming a patron
🔥 — Art isn’t my thing, I’d rather make a buck
⭐️ — Thanks for the post
