Pavel Durov has filed an application to obtain the .gram domain extension.

The news is definitely positive. However, there’s an important nuance: the process of obtaining such a domain extension is extremely lengthy. The process roughly looks like this:

Application → public disclosure → reviews/objections → technical and organizational evaluation → possible domain dispute → contract with ICANN → technical onboarding → DNS delegation.

In this round, applications were accepted until August 12, 2026. So Durov clearly made the deadline, given that he has already announced it.

The entire process can take 1.5–3 years from application to actual use of .gram. In an ideal scenario, it could be somewhat faster (as little as 9 months), but a lot of things would have to go perfectly:

There are no competing applicants for .gram
No objections are filed
All technical checks are passed
The necessary documents are signed quickly after approval
Onboarding and DNS delegation proceed quickly

My feeling is that a realistic window would be 2027–2028. Only then could .gram domains be fully launched.

Essentially, usernames would become these domains.

But what happens to .ton domains then... My condolences to those who were buying them. The chances of making a profit are getting smaller and smaller.
