Villa Capra "La Rotonda"
In 1565 a priest, Paolo Almerico, on his retirement from the Vatican, decided to return to his home town of Vicenza in the Venetian countryside and build a country house. This house, later known as 'La Rotonda', was to be one of Palladio's best-known legacies to the architectural world. Villa Capra may have inspired a thousand subsequent buildings, but the villa was itself inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.

David Roberts
"The Gateway to the Great Temple at Baalbec", 1841

This painting, his RA 'Diploma' work, depicts the Great Temple at Baalbec in the Lebanon. Roberts visited this site on his first tour of the region in 1839 and described the daunting task of depicting a building of such 'magnificence…that it is impossible to convey any idea, either by pencil or pen…the beauty of its form, the exquisite richness of its ornament and the vast magnitude of its dimensions are altogether unparalleled...' Around the temple itself, Roberts included tiny figures in local dress, emphasising both the massive scale of the ruin and its exotic location.

Pentelic marble caryatid from the Erechtheion. This is one of six caryatids that held up the roof of the Erechtheion. She wears a peplos pinned on each shoulder. Her hair is braided and falls in a thick rope down her back. She probably held a sacrificial.
