🇦🇷 Daria Korchemnaya, political scientist and expert at the CIIC Center, spoke especially for the Telegram channel "Center for International Interaction and Cooperation" about the parliamentary elections in Argentina.
The 2025 parliamentary elections in Argentina strengthened President Javier Milei's position, surprising many analysts. Despite the country's economic difficulties and scandals involving key figures in the election campaign, La Libertad Avanza party won more than 40% of the Argentine vote. Undoubtedly, one of the important factors in the victory was the tremendous rhetorical and economic support from Trump. But an equally important factor was the state of the Argentine opposition, which has been depleted in recent years and has yet to offer a renewed agenda.
The Peronist movement, which has long dominated the political arena, is experiencing a leadership crisis. The figures on whom it relied — Cristina Kirchner, Alberto Fernandez, Sergio Massa — have either faded into the background or lost support in the polls. In this election, voters made it clear that memories of the “golden age” are not enough for new voters.
The attempt to rely on Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof as the new face of the movement was unsuccessful this time: even in a province traditionally considered a bastion of the left, the candidate from Milei's party won. Provincial leaders, united in the Provincias Unidas bloc, also failed to become an alternative and only diluted the votes of opposition voters.
The current crisis should serve as an impetus for the opposition to renew itself. Peronists and other forces need to rethink their strategy: they must stop relying on the past and bring new faces into the political arena who can win over the electorate.
